I am going to a writers conference and they are having a slush pile simulator there. I need your help to make my first page shine!
A closed-lipped smile pulled at the corners of the woman’s pale face as she gazed at the angry crowd before her. Her eyes moved to her left where her closest friend stood yawning, not at all worried about the small hunting knives and pitchforks that were pointing at her and her three companions.
Their hands were bound with rough rope at their backs. They stood on a wooden platform that creaked under their weight when they moved. The four strongest men in the small village were holding the prisoners firmly as another villager ran to the nearest guard tower.
The pale woman looked to her right at her two other companions. A very large man and a woman stood there. Unlike the other two they seemed nervous. The woman’s dark brown eyes looked down at her pointed slippers, uncomfortable with all the eyes on her. Her brown hair shielded her face from the townspeople’s eyes, while the large man by her rocked from side to side.
Both turned to the look at the woman when they felt her stare bearing into them. The brunette nodded once and looked back down at the slippers, her frown deepening.
The woman closed her eyes.
Heat touched her face and the screams of the people filled her ears, she smiled and opened her eyes. The village she saw just moments ago was gone and blazing flames took its place. The charred remains of the villagers were sprawled across the ground their bodies reflected their agony. Black billows of thick smoke curled up towards the blue morning sky from the flames that still burned.
"That ought to get their attention," the woman purred.
